The Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque in Abu Dhabi | And What's So Great About It

Majestic. Magnificent. Massive.

These were the first words that came to my mind upon first laying eyes on the Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque in Abu Dhabi. As the largest mosque in the country, the 2-billion-dirham structure is truly one of the most iconic man-made feats in this desert land.

It is immaculately white, which is said to represent purity and piety. (For some reason, though, it reminds me of the palace in Aladdin.) The Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque comprises 82 domes of different sizes. It is home to the largest hand-knotted carpet in the world, as well as to the second largest chandelier to ever adorn a mosque.

Here is an excerpt from the Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque Center's website:

"The main prayer hall houses the world’s largest hand-knotted carpet. The intricate Islamic medallion design was made by third generation carpet maker and artist, Dr. Ali Khaliqi.  The predominantly wool carpet was hand-crafted by approximately 1,200 artisans.
Its creation was a two year project, the design took approximately 8 months, the knotting 12 months and the remaining time to transport, trim and weave the pieces together. The final single piece carpet is 5,700 square meters, about 70% being wool and the rest of 30% is cotton."

Absolutely spectacular in day light, the Grand Mosque is an even more ethereal sight to behold at night. It is outfitted with a lighting system which reflects the different phases of the moon. As the moon becomes fuller and complete, the lights become brighter and more dazzling, presenting a mesmerizing picture to any spectator.

If you ever get the chance to visit the UAE, a trip to the Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque is a must. (Hey! Even Prince Charles and Princess Camilla paid a visit!) It really is one of the most beautiful and wonderful man-made structures in the world. And it's quite easy to get there, as I've blogged here.

Here are some photos my boyfriend took. He's a better photographer than me so I told him I'm borrowing his photos for my blog. :) Please feel free to view and admire the Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque in all its pristine splendor.
